The police said a man on Friday night struck a congregant at the prominent Upper East Side synagogue, as Jews in the city contend with threats, fears and internal divides.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Central Synagogue was receiving additional police resources after a man disrupted worship there on Friday night.
Larry Montes, 46, faces assault and hate crime charges after striking a congregation member and a security guard at Central Synagogue in Manhattan, the police said.
